Looking for Sailing Training Courses, Club or Association (NauticEd or RYA etc) . Or maybe you want to find information on the ‘rules of the road’ and safety at sea, or even better attend or watch one of the many epic and prestigious boat shows, regattas or races.
The KiwiSailor was born from a lifelong passion for the sea and a desire to share the unparalleled freedom of sailing. Founded by a seasoned sailor from New Zealand, with a mission to demystify sailing and inspire a new generation of adventurers to cast off the lines and explore the world’s oceans. I believe that sailing is more than a hobby; it’s a way to connect with nature, challenge yourself, and create unforgettable memories. Whether you’re dreaming of your first day on the water or planning an epic offshore passage, I’m here to be your trusted guide.
It all started in 1990 when I managed to blag my way onto a fancy yacht...
You could say my sailing career had a bit of a rocky start. Back in 1990, I managed to blag my way onto a fancy yacht, the Sadler Barracuda 45, apparently from the TV show Howard’s Way. One weekend sailing around the UK was all it took. Despite spending a good chunk of Saturday feeding the fish over the side, I was hooked.
Fast forward thirty-odd years, and I’m still just as obsessed. I’ve raced (badly) around Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay, had a few adventures sailing from Glasgow to Portsmouth, and clocked up some serious hours relaxing on charter boats in the Med.
After all this time, my head’s full of checklists, learnings, and a fair few "what not to do" stories. But the funny thing is, I still feel like I'm just scratching the surface. Every trip on the water teaches you something new, which is probably what keeps me coming back.
That’s why I’ve started this blog – to share a few of those yarns and hard-won lessons. This isn't a lecture hall, though. I'm keen to hear from you too. If you’ve got a story or a bit of knowledge to share (the good, the bad, or the downright ugly), then pull up a seat. You’re more than welcome here.
